R22, also known as chlorodifluoromethane, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant that was commonly used in air conditioning, refrigeration, and heat pump systems. However, due to its ozone-depleting properties, its production and import have been phased out in many countries as part of the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty aimed at protecting the ozone layer. As a result, R22 is being replaced by more environmentally friendly refrigerants, and existing systems using R22 are being retrofitted or replaced with newer, ozone-safe alternatives.
